The coffee addiction that I picked up in Vietnam and that Rob has nurtured for basically a lifetime continues. We went to Malaysia on a whim after seeing flights for £20 each and decided we’d spend a week relaxing and working, in a desperate attempt to earn some more money before visiting Japan.
We were forecast heavy thunderstorms, grey skies and almost constant rain, but when we arrived we actually found most days provided us with at least a few hours of beautiful sunshine. So with weather like that it was impossible to sit inside all day and we ended up spending far more time getting out and exploring Penang and Kuala Lumpur, the two areas we’d decided to see on our trip. That said, we still managed to spend a lot of time sitting in various hipsterish cafes and charming coffee shops getting high on caffeine and trying frantically to meet our deadlines. Here’s where we most enjoyed drinking coffee and spending time hiding from the blazing sun in Georgetown, Penang.
1. Black Kettle
105, Beach St, Georgetown, 10300 George Town
This place was our top choice, with plenty of power stations, surprisingly decent wifi and a relaxed atmosphere we spent a lot of time here working. They have an onsite bakery and sell amazing cakes as well as all the coffee you could dream of.
2. Coffee on the Table
164, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town
I was keen to visit this place after seeing the very instagrammable 3D coffee art they specialise in and was not disappointed. We had a beaut breakfast – fry up for me and eggs benedict for Rob and got stuck into the cutest cappuccinos you’ve ever seen. Definitely worth a visit and if go back I’m determined to try their dessert and coffee selections which look amazing.
3. The Twelve Cups
12, The WhiteAways Arcade, Beach St, George Town, 10300 George Town
After a long day of wandering we ended up here by chance and were really glad we stumbled across it. Coffees and cold drinks were all top notch and they have one of the most delicious displays of cake I’ve been tempted by. The food menu also looks good and many couples popped in for an early supper.
302, Lebuh Chulia, George Town, 10200 George Town
One of the best cappuccinos I’ve had, paired with a tasty fresh orange juice. This place is a rustic style cafe with a co owned bakery next door specialising in delicious breakfast pastries and bagels. Not the best for getting work done but the perfect spot for breakfast in the sun while watching the world go by.
5. My Own Cafe
2, Cannon Street,, George Town, 10200 George Town
A more traditional cafe, this cafe only serves a couple of options including fresh carrot, apple and orange juices as well as standard and durian (ergh) flavoured coffees. The owner is lovely and it’s right on the corner of Lebuh Armenian making it a good place to stop for a break when exploring all the street art on offer.
